Inauguration of new Congo Terminal infrastructures

Congo. 19 February 2020

The new infrastructures of Congo Terminal, the concessionary of the Pointe-Noire container terminal in Republic of Congo, were inaugurated on 19 February 2020 by President S.E. Denis Sassou Nguesso.

These facilities are part of the plan to modernise the Pointe-Noire Port. The Congo Terminal concessionary carried out the extension and reconstruction work on the 800 linear metres of the G dock and in parallel constructed the 700 linear metres of the D dock.

Since 2009, Congo Terminal has already invested FCFA 250 billion (€400 million) in the development of infrastructure, the acquisition of stevedoring equipment and the installation of a high-performance operating system. Through these investments, the Pointe-Noire Port is now able to welcome ships of over 14,000 twenty-foot equivalent (TEU) and has attained an average productivity rate of over 60 movements an hour, as well as an average dock waiting time for ships of slightly under 24 hours. In 2019, Congo Terminal also set a new performance record with 920,000 TEU containers handled.

This inauguration testifies to the success of the public-private partnership between the Congolese authorities and Congo Terminal. We are proud to have contributed to making the Pointe-Noire Autonomous Port the main gateway to the Congo basin and one of the leading transshipment platforms in Central Africa. Committed to a sustainable investment approach, Congo Terminal pays major attention to the inclusive development of Congolese communities through solidarity actions. Concerned about its socio-economic footprint, the company is involved in an environmental certification process that makes Congo Terminal, a precursor to the Green Terminal label on the Atlantic façade.

Congo Terminal today has 900 Congolese employees. Seeking to promote and develop local skills, the company is also committed alongside several NGOs to leading social and environmental initiatives. In 2019, it contributed to the social reintegration of over 1,000 young people, trained over 300 entrepreneurs on management techniques, and raised the awareness of some 47,000 children on environmental protection.
